Wednesday 24th April - Talk from a Pilot

Yesterday evening members gathered at Gravenhurst Village Hall at 8pm where Captain Carl Downing kindly agreed to come to our club meeting and talk about his career as a pilot.

Members thoroughly enjoyed it!

Results of the Northern Region Finals of the Intermediate Public Speaking Competition

2 members from Silsoe were lucky enough to go forward and represent Bedfordshire YF along with 2 other Bedfordshire members at the Northern Region Intermediate Public Speaking Competition held on Sunday. 

Having won the County competition back in November and then again at the Eastern Area competition in March, they travelled on Sunday to compete in the next stage of the competition. 

Katie Skipper and Charlotte Tomkins (Silsoe members) were joined by Harry (Biggleswade member) and Rupert (Bedford member) to create the team of 4. 

Overall they came 3rd!! 

Well done guys!!!

Silsoe's Road Sign advertising the Bedfordshire Young Farmers Annual Country Show and Rally

Designing and erecting a road sign advertising the Bedfordshire Young Farmers Annual Country Show and Rally is just one of the 180 classes that clubs participate in, in order to gain points. 

Yesterday afternoon a few members put the sign up, so if your driving down the A507 take a quick look!  

Thanks goes to Tom Harwood for all his efforts on creating the sign.

Wednesday 17th April - Maskells Tractor Museum Tour

This weeks meeting saw almost 40 members head over to Wilstead to take a look around Maskells Tractor Museum. Members saw a wide collection of old tractors and equipment.

Stock Judging and Tug of War Prelims Results - Sunday 14th April

Stock Judging
The day started with the Stock Judging Competition. 

Overall six members from Silsoe took part and the results were:

Emily Walker came 3rd in the Junior Parry Cup
Alice Redman came 5th in the Intermediate Parry Cup

A team of four Silsoe members also came 3rd in the Team Parry Cup

How does it work? 
A pen of four animals either pigs, sheep, beef or dairy cows are labelled A, B, X and Y. Members are then allowed ten minutes to judge the four animals on their confirmation and which animal is ready for slaughter. After they have done so they are then given two minutes in front of a judge to describe why they placed the animals in their order.

Ben Jepps and Charlotte Tomkins represented Silsoe in this competition and had to eat a cricket and they also had to search through a bucket of maggots for screws. 

Tug of War
Four junior teams took part in the competition. They were made up of between seven to ten boys or girls between 12 to 17 years of age and weighing a maximum of 600kg.

The boys and girls team consist of eight members who have to weigh no more than 680kg or 580kg respectively. Overall there was five boys and five girls teams that took part.

Overall the men's team came 4th. Both the juniors and ladies team, whilst winning the prelims, now go forward to rally day to compete for 1st place. 

Congratulations to all 25 members taking part in the Tug of War and thanks goes to Tony Wuidart and Ben Jepps for training us.

Stock Judging and Tug of War Prelims - Sunday 14th April 2013

Just a reminder for members..

This Sunday is the Stock Judging and Tug of War competition at Manor Farm, Hoggeston , MK18 3LH.

Members participating in the Stock Judging competition need to arrive at 9 amThose in the Tug of War teams need to be there at 12 pm ready for weighing in.

There will also be a 'I'm a Young Farmer get me out of here' competition starting at 12.30 pm.

There will be a bar, BBQ and other refreshments available on site. Members not taking part please come along and support Silsoe.

Fence Erecting Competition - Sunday 7th April 2013


This year’s Fence Erecting competition was held at Watergate Farm, Hockcliffe by kind permission of the Hunt Family.

Five teams consisting of three members were given two hours to erect a fence.





Silsoe's Team - Sam, Matt and Ben


Sam, Matt and Ben represented Silsoe Young Farmers and came 2nd overall. Well done boys!

The results were as followed:

1st Bedford YFC

2nd Silsoe YFC

3rd Leighton Buzzard YFC

4th North Beds YFC

5th Leighton Buzzard YFC


The team now go on with Bedford to represent Bedfordshire at the Eastern Area Round, hosted by Bedfordshire Young Farmers, on Saturday 15th June.
